PHOTO

This photograph of the physical print is depicting the craft entering the earth's atmosphere, similar shot to certain scenes in 2001: A Space Odyssey.

RENDER

Rendered out image. It shows the ailen crafts at the moment of landing on earth and metamorphing into pyramids to desguise themselves. In thousands of years to come they will have no evidence of where they came from or what they are and humanity will assume that they were created by us, much like the ancient pyramids in Egypt.

Experimenting with adding the photoshop textures and bump maps, materials etc...
I found an egyptian prymamid texture online and altered the colours to give an ancient artifact rough stone look.
I experimented with adding a background in the environment with a matte shadow plane. This turned out quite well, but now  I have to find an appropreate material and a background that fits better.
I picked out the 3 best ones and created a backdrop with a bitmap background. It didn't have the desired effect and looked warped and unrealisic.

Alterations

I went onto 3DS Max and made multiple alterations to my solidworks model with different modfiers.

Further developent into design

I proceded to experiment and bring my design further forward by creating a shell on one of the blank faces to create a reverse asthetic of the exterior.

I shelled out the other two faces to create a complex/optical illusion (second image) and a simple shell on the last face. This makes a nice transition between the three faces: extreme shell, moderate shell, and simple/basic shell. This also created a hollowed out interrior of each of the other 3 faces (the extruded ones) with the same jagged steps; you can see what I'm talking about by looking at the inside of the first shell.

All faces extruded by the measurements in the post below

All faces extruded by measurements below.
I then tried simplifying the design by keeping 3 of the faces blank for further experimentation.

Sketch and mesurements

I sketched up what dimentions each of the faces should be extruded from a cube to form a pyramid like shape. I worked out that each step should be extruded by 3mm and incremented by 1.5mm.

Proposal

My concept is to show ailen crafts coming to earth and taking form as pyramids which will become unknown artifacts in thousands of years to come. It's a play one the fact that we don't actually know where or how the egyptian pyramids were created/came about. The design of the crafts were inspired by aspects of M.C. Escher's illusion art and the egyptian pyramids. The overall concept is losely based around the extremely influencial science fiction film, 2001: A Space Odyssey directed by by Stanley Kubric.

Final laser cut model photo

Final render

Renders

I experimented with lots of different lighting, backgrounds and materials while working through the rendering process. I decided to go with a clear shell that corresponds with my acrylic skeletal like layers in my model, and a black inside to represent the organics of the insect.

Sketch models

I prefered the 4th model out of all 5 because it gives the model movement/appearance that the incect is in mid flight instead of being stationary, which insects rarely are. Also it spaces the layers well to give it depth.

Development/Deciding what sketch to work with and works best with my precidents.

I went though some of my previous renders from the last project to find out which one had the the most interesting sections and would best to work with. I decided to go with the third one; it has the best symetry between my two precidents, has enough flexibility to experiment with different styles of models and each section works nicely together to show a pleasing asthetic.

I scaled down each layer into one "Ai" file, then printed it out, traced it and at the same time fixing up any overlapping lines. I then scanned it back into the computer and formatted it to be ready for laser cutting.

Precidents

I wanted to work around the idea of giving my model an essence of an incect or the horned beetle to be more specific. Also combining this with bones that have holes e.g. the coccyx to give an interesting exoskeleton to the insect model.

Deep-ocean, prehistoric, flow

Hero

I chose this as my hero because it ties in the three words deep-ocean, prehistoric, flow; the best. It is like the diver is descovering this ancient spiecies of jellyfish for the first time. I also used a personalised material found on the internet.

81 itterations

I used the lighting to look like a deep sea submarine using a light to illuminate the black void, then finding prehistoric creatures that have flowing forms that seem to grow from within themselves.

Hero render trials

I did different trials to which hero image was the strongest. This trial shows the composition, lighting and some of the materials being tried out.

I wanted to reinforce my word deep-sea so I picked a background that shows a lot of black space with my image placed as the focus. It also shows a diver in the background snooping around descovering a "prehistoric" jellyfish, which links to my other word as well.

The images below are showing me trying out different materials and heroes.

Compiling in Photoshop

After rendering the three groups I began to compile the images into photoshop.

I used the mask tool on two of the layers to get rid of the black space.

Then moved them around till they fit neatly as one image.
